Indigenous Futurism
Indigenous Futurisms refers to the placement of Indigenous Peoples throughout time and space through science fiction, art, film, and pop culture. Indigenous Futurism allows Native creators to reimagine societal tropes, alternative histories and futures through the exploration of science fiction and its sub-genres. It paints a picture of Native communities in the future or in alternative timelines – in a world that could have been. MNA's Anthropology Collections Manager, Tony Thibodeau, will lead a virtual panel discussion on Indigenous futurisms and the new contributions to popular culture by Indigenous creators. This panel will explore these trends from the point of view of individual creators and address issues such as decolonization and Indigenous representation in mainstream popular culture. Panelists include: Dr. Lee Francis, CEO of Native Realities Publishing, and the founder of the Indigenous Comic Con and Red Planet Books and Comics (Pueblo of Laguna) Ryan Singer, artist (Diné - Navajo) Darcie Little Badger, author (Lipan Apache) Nanobah Becker, filmmaker (Diné - Navajo)
