Feeding Northern Arizona's Future
- Associations & Non-Profits
Feeding Northern Arizona’s Future (FNAZF) is a 100% volunteer based non-profit which directly impacts children here in Flagstaff. Currently between 1,500 and 2,000 elementary age students here in Flagstaff have little or no food on the weekends. Their main source of food is provided by the school at breakfast and lunch. Some of those harder hit schools also provide dinners. We provide food to the schools on Thursday to be put discreetly into the kid’s backpacks for the weekend. Our food bags have 6 meals and a few snacks. We really work hard to provide a lot of food and keep the cost as low as possible, it costs us $200 per school year to feed each kid. Even though food should be a right it seems to be viewed as a privilege, one that we disagree with. This is very important to Flagstaff primarily because of the statistic that come with programs like ours. Kids who participate in programs such as ours have an increase in math test scores by 23%, reading tests scores improves by 30% and absenteeism and behavioral issues decreases by 40%. These children are Flagstaff’s future, so if food will brighten their stars then we need to do everything we can to ensure that they get that opportunity. Our mission is to provide food to all of the kids in Flagstaff, and eventually Northern Arizona who suffer from hunger on the weekends.
