Born in WWII-era Holland to a Jewish mother and non-Jewish father, Dirk Van Leenen's family suffered Nazi persecution after his father's rescue efforts were exposed. They were arrested and sent on a deadly four-day train ride to Bergen-Belsen, with liberation coming just a day after their arrival. Tragically, most relatives died in other camps, but two cousins escaped.

Van Leenen, author of “Resistance on a Bicycle,” “The Americans are Coming,” and “The Last Train to the Concentration Camp,” speaks out to share his harrowing story.
